Belgian duo Vincent Kompany and Thibaut Courtois have laughed off the idea of Romelu Lukaku retiring from international football after Euro 2020. The Manchester United striker recently claimed that he has the plan to step down from national team duty after the next major tournament but his compatriots don’t believe that would be the case.

Speaking to reporters, Red Devils captain Kompany was surprised by even the thought of Lukaku hanging his boots in 2020 and feels the striker may end up regretting the statement, he said: “I can hardly imagine that I’m going to have a lot of trouble convincing him to go even further. Young players sometimes say things that they later regret. We all laughed at it.”
Meanwhile, former Chelsea teammate Thibaut Courtois also refused to believe to the claim but admitted that it would be ‘very unfortunate’, should Lukaku retire from Belgium duty at the age of just 27, he quipped: “Do I believe him? Not really, but you never know, of course. An attacker like Lukaku works very hard and has little rest. That weighs in time. But if we were to win the European Championship, I cannot imagine that he will stop. It would be very unfortunate.”
Lukaku has transformed into a top-class marksman during his time in the Premier League and he has also created history with the national side after becoming their leading goalscorer. Despite this, there has been a sense of frustration with Belgium’s golden generation yet to win a major silverware and Lukaku’s plan may turn to reality, should the country fail to make amends at Euro 2020.
Meanwhile, Lukaku has been a quality recruit for Manchester United since joining them from Everton last year and he has already contributed over 30 goals for the club across all competitions. Despite this, the Mancunian giants are yet to come close to competing for the league title and the wait may extend for another campaign, considering the slow start made this term. United have already suffered a couple of defeats this season and this sees them trailing leaders Chelsea by six points after just five matches played.
